Here’s an excellent alternative to a hair straightener. It’s very good value for money, lasts a long time thanks to its cotton construction, and, above all, is gentle on your hair!

Although it seems easy to use, there are still a few handy tips worth knowing. And as we’re quite a friendly lot, we’re going to share them with you in this article!

Authentic Algerian kardoune: a return to nature that does you good 

• A brief introduction 

Authentic kardoune is a ribbon in warm colours, made from woven cotton. First of all, it is a a hair-styling method known as «traditional», as it has its origins among the Berbers of the Maghreb, particularly in Kabylie.

This is one of many traditional beauty secrets that have been passed down from generation to generation for centuries. The cardigan hair is a true legacy, one to which many women continue to fall for.

It is now also used by many Western women. In particular, women who have chosen to incorporate it into their beauty routine completely natural practices.

• Where it comes from 

Our kardouns are 100% manufactured in Algeria. What’s more, they are traditionally made using the same materials as in days gone by. They are therefore authentic and original kardounes.

• Composition 

It’s made of cotton and polyester. 

• Note that 

Authentic kardoune must be chosen with care. Many are sold at markets at more attractive prices, but are by no means of good quality. In fact, these are made of synthetic material, which undermines the intended effect.
That’s why, before you can achieve the result you’re hoping for, you need to choose the right product!

• Its primary objective is the’smoothing effect that’it offers

For those who haven’t straightened their hair beforehand, this product is widely used to relax and smooth the hair fibre. You’ll achieve a more natural-looking result whilst looking after your precious hair.
However, it also helps to prolong the results of straightening treatments carried out using heated styling tools. What’s more, it can be used on straight, wavy, curly, frizzy or even kinky hair.

• Prevents knots and chafing: 

Not only is genuine kardoune extremely soft, but it also helps keep your hair in good condition throughout the night. This is because movement on the pillow can cause your hair to stand on end, split, become tangled and may even dry it out.

Contrary to popular belief, just because it holds your hair in place doesn’t mean it stops it from breathing. In fact, its composition allows air to reach your hair.

But actually, how do you use authentic Algerian kardoune for hair? 

What’s really handy about this oriental ribbon, it’s how quickly you can put it on. In fact, once you’ve got the hang of it, it only takes 5 minutes to put on!

Here are the various steps to follow to achieve a very satisfactory result:

• Step 1:

Ideally, you should dampen your hair (note that ‘dampen’ does not mean ‘soak it completely’!).

You can also add some gel d’aloe vera or flaxseed. And then vegetable oil (such as argan oil, from castor or our selection of black cumin oils, for example) to keep your skin moisturised. Be careful not to use too much! Just a few drops will do!

• Step 2:

You should then brush your hair to detangle it, thereby removing any knots and frizz. If you have frizzy or curly hair, you may find it difficult to detangle.

To avoid any pain caused by styling, you could opt for a brush such as Tangle Teezer For example. It’s very flexible and allows you to detangle your hair gently, without causing any pain or damage.

• Step 3: 

You will then need to tie your hair into a tight, low ponytail using a hair tie. You should remove this once you have finished all the steps, so as not to leave any marks on your hair.

Tip: wear your ponytail to one side so it doesn’t get in the way whilst you’re sleeping.

• Step 4:

Before rolling up your Algerian kardoune, you need to leave one end free so that you can tie it at the end. To hold this end securely, you can hold it between your teeth. Then, position the kardoune and wrap the rest of it around your ponytail.
You must avoid leaving any gaps and tighten it properly. This is to ensure that it does not come loose or become slack.

Next, leave a few centimetres of your ends uncovered, and comb through that small remaining section.

• Step 5:

Next, taking the end that was set aside earlier and the end left over at the end, you’ll need to tie these two ends together. Make sure you tie a secure knot.

• Step 6:

You need to «leave your» beauty accessory for as long as possible. Ideally, leave it on overnight to achieve a more than satisfactory result.

• Step 7:

To remove it, simply untie the knot and pull on one end. The authentic kardoune will then unroll in a matter of seconds. You will eventually discover a shiny, moisturised, relaxed and smooth hair. And all this, naturally!

But what length of authentic kardoune should I choose for my hair? 

The length of the Kardoune obviously depends on the length of your hair!

• For short hair (above the shoulders) down to chest length, you should opt for the 2.50-metre ribbon;
• For hair that reaches from the middle of your back to the bottom of your bum, you’ll need a 5-metre length of ribbon;
• And if your hair is even longer, you'll need to a 10-metre length of ribbon.

Incidentally, it’s important to note that it’s advisable to always choose a longer kardoune. This is so that you can use it for longer, even as your hair grows.

Caring for this oriental beauty accessory 

Caring for kardoune is very simple. All you need to do is wash it in cold water with soap.

And you can, of course, machine-wash it at 30 degrees. However, to prevent it from fraying or getting caught in the machine, wrap it in a small mesh bag.
